Canada eTA or visitor visa — by country
Summary: whether you need an eTA or a visitor visa depends on your nationality, how you travel (air, land, or sea), and your documents. Rules change — always confirm on the official IRCC site before you book or travel.
Check what you need (official tool) Entry requirements by country (IRCC)
Some countries appear under “visa required,” but certain travellers may qualify for an eTA instead if they meet IRCC conditions (for example a valid U.S. visa or a recent Canadian visa). See: Conditional eTA eligibility
Usually need an eTA (flying to Canada)
Visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to Canada generally need an eTA linked to a passport. Different rules apply to U.S. citizens and U.S. lawful permanent residents. For arrival by car, bus, train, or boat (including cruise ships), an eTA is not required, but you still need valid documents — see IRCC.
